About Anti-Wrinkle Treatments
As we age and our skin starts to lose its elasticity, the lines and wrinkles of facial expression start to become more visible, by reducing the action of these muscles, the lines and wrinkles are reduced and even stopped from appearing altogether. Wrinkle reduction treatments, commonly referred to as a “Botox Treatment”, can be used to reduce this muscle action, thereby smoothing and softening the appearance of these lines and wrinkles, creating a fresher and more youthful appearance. Botox. is one brand of the medication Botulinum Toxin Type A, a purified protein that when injected into a muscle causes the muscle to relax. It works by blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscle, this temporarily reduces the muscle movement which in turn reduces the appearance of the wrinkles on the surface of the skin. They are used to by causing a temporary relaxation of the treated facial muscles. By altering the muscle movements, we can also create
effects such as lifted eyebrows or stop the corners of the mouth turning downwards. For some people even headaches can be reduced. This medication has been used medically for almost 50 years for many conditions, for example children with cerebral palsy have it regularly for muscle spasms. Botulinum Toxin Type a has been used cosmetically for over 35 years, being one of the UK’s most popular cosmetic treatment for the removal of wrinkles, with thousands of these treatments being carried out every year. It is a quick procedure with little or no downtime, with amazing results. By relaxing the facial muscles, wrinkles are made less visible; this results in a natural, rejuvenated look. The procedure is safe, pain free and is relatively quick to perform.
A full consultation is always carried out prior to your first treatment, including full medical history, to ensure suitability, and also to give you all the information you need and to allow you a chance to ask any questions, and to give you a cooling off period to give you time to think about the procedure before your first treatment. Once the treatment is carried out, it takes a few days for the results to start to show, with a gradual improvement before full effect is seen at 14-21 days. Any
review, if needed, will be carried out after 14 days. The results will last for 3-5 months, with a gradual return to normal movement. Some people worry that they will look “Frozen”, at Alchemy skin clinic we much prefer to encourage a more natural look, wanting you to just look refreshed and less tired, not frozen or obviously treated. Due to regulations in the UK, we are unable to show before and after photographs

What happens during the treatment?
Treatment will only be carried out following a thorough consultation. Treatment can be carried out on the day of consultation. I will fully explain where and why I will place the very small injections. The injections will be placed into the muscle that is causing the movement that causes the lines and wrinkles. It can take 14-21 days to see the full
effect although for most people, they start to see the results at 5-7 days. For new patients I will always offer a follow up at 2-3 weeks to check the results, if more is required it can be added then.
How long does the treatment take?
Your first visit, if this includes the consultation will be 45-60 minutes. After this your visit will be 30 minutes.
Does it hurt?
The injections are carried out with the smallest of needles, you will feel a small pinch or nothing at all.
How long will the effects last?
Botulinum toxin takes up to 14 days to take full effect, with these effects lasting for 3-4 months. The Botox is injected into the muscles, and simply put, blocks the message from the nerve to the muscle, so the muscle is in effect put to sleep. This effect gradually wears off and the muscle returns to normal movement. There are no lasting
effects from this treatment, the Botox completely wears off.
Do I need repeated treatments?
Because the treatment effects completely wear off after around 3 months, to maintain the effect the treatment does have to be repeated regularly. The minimum time between treatments is 12 weeks. You are advised to have
treatment every 12-16 weeks. There shouldn’t be too long between treatments once there is a return to movement or the lines on the skin will become deeper again. when first starting Botox treatments it is advised to have the treatment at 12 week intervals for the first year, after that you may be able to have a longer interval.
What will I look like immediately after treatment?
There will be small bumps to the areas injected, but for most people these have disappeared with one hour or sooner, for some they can last a little longer. As it is an injection into the skin, there is always the possibility of a bruise. Most of the time this doesn’t happen, but everyone will experience a bruise at some point in their “Botox Life”. Results can differ slightly at each treatment, this is the nature of the treatment, its somewhat like going to the
hairdresser, same hairdresser, same cut, same colour but there can be slight differences each time.
Do I need to do anything special before or after the treatment?
Following treatment, there have traditionally been instructions to not lie flat or bend forward for 4 hours, and to move the area treated. There is currently no strong evidence that any of these things are necessary. As a precaution it is advised not to do exercise for the rest of the day.
Are there any adverse effects
Very rarely, having Botox can cause a temporary relaxation of a muscle that was not intended to be treated. Typically, this might be the eye lid, and a ptosis can occur. Should this happen there are eye drops that can be prescribed to temporarily relieve this. If the Botox has been used in the lower face there is a possibility of asymmetry
on smiling, again this is rare. Any adverse effect from Botox treatment will always wear off, there are never any permanent effects form this treatment.
